Hillside Retaining Walls
in Los Angeles

On a hillside lot in Los Angeles, you are never just building a wall, you are managing soil, water, and seismic pressure at the same time. Lots across the Hollywood Hills, Laurel Canyon, Bel Air, and Pacific Palisades sit on grades that shift after heavy rain and move during earthquakes, which means a retaining wall built without proper engineering is a liability waiting for the next wet winter.

DiBara team deserves a 5-star plus plus for the work that they wall that they repaired for us. I have worked with various contractors over the past 30 years, but this is the first time that the process was smooth, on budget, on time and the outcome exceeded my expectations. Our wall was damaged via a car accident driven by our neighbor (please see before and after pictures attached). Early in the process, Renee was quick to provide a high level quote via a zoom call. Then Edgar came to my house to observe the damage and provided a detailed quote. There was a cap on how much the insurance company was paying so Edgar worked with his team to give us additional discounts in order to reduce the amount of money our neighbor would have to pay out of pockets. Their prices were lower than two other companies so the $97 inspection fee was credited. The construction team included Chayan, Francisco, Leo, Gabrino, Joe , Fernando and Juan, and they all were professional, meticulous, courteous and operated safety. Francisco, Edgar and Chayan accommodated the higher quality bricks that we chose without nickel and dime us and our neighbor. The team communicated progress well and cleaned up the area at the end of each day. I feel this company is ethical, provides superior work and services to its customers at lower prices. I definitely will use DiBara Masonry again and will be referring this company to others. Thank you DiBara team!!

I called DiBara Masonry after a vehicle had struck my wall, severely damaging it. They came out, gave me a very detailed proposal for my insurance and took care of the repair in a clean and timely manner. They were able to match the existing stucco perfectly. When I found a few issues with the paint after the job was completed, the DiBara crew stood by their work and came back out to correct the problem. This is my second time using these professionals and I will continue to use them for any further projects on my home.

We loved working with DiBara on our project. Work was delivered on-time with courtesy and professionalism. We installed steps in our front yard. It was not a small job (for us), being on a hill, and, in addition to the masonry, included installing custom railing and adding low voltage lighting. Communication with our project rep, Chayan, was smooth and timely. He coordinated subs (Roberto the electrician was also awesome) and kept us informed. Our on-site project manager, Carlos, and his team were great. We worked cooperatively on the design, and Carlos came up with a better result than we could have imagined, and consistently kept in mind the goal of the project (give my elderly dad a way to get from the street to the house safely) We added to the scope of work mid-way through, and DiBara handled it all with professionalism. We recommend them wholeheartedly.

I needed to repair a crack in my driveway block wall as well as lay down some concrete in my driveway. My experience with DiBara Masonry was excellent from the initial call, to the in home estimate, as well as signing the contract thru the online portal (which also accepts payments). Fredy, Jessie, Darwin, Francisco, Miriam and the rest of the team were all on-time everyday, professional, experienced, and very skilled. The team has pride in the quality of their work— that resonated with me to the extent that I doubled the scope of the Project (demolished an old stucco wood based wall and replaced it with a 7 foot block wall). DiBara sent more manpower when it was needed, and the team cleaned up so well after alot of demolition debris. Even after my final invoice payment — I needed them to repair a small leak in a water line that needed to be moved. Fredy accommodated this request without any hesitation. I HIGHLY recommend DiBara masonry for any services that they provide. Over the past 20 years, I’ve dealt with at least 10-15 contractors for various projects, and DiBara Masonry is at the top of the list of Contractors with whom I’m most satisfied. Thank you Dibara! Quick update January 2026: I used Dibara once more to repair alot of stucco and weatherproof damage on my detached garage, as well as laid new concrete and tiles that nearly matched my 20 year old courtyard tiles— they were prompt, professional, and patient as they searched for several weeks to find tiles that matched my old ones. I would gladly use their services again for any project, in their words, “we can build anything outside of your house”. Thanks again Dibara!

DiBara masonry responded quickly to a wall that had been accidently damaged by a neighbor. They were able to identify a cost-effective solution that fit well within our budgets, sent people out immediately even though the weather wasn't the greatest, and completed the work, with it looking like it was never damaged in the first place. Thank you, would definitely recommend!

Dibara Masonry did a great job replacing a retaining wall that had fallen over. The whole process was seamless and easy. I will not hesitate to use them again. They gave me a couple options to repair it and explained everything thoroughly. I am confident that this retaining wall is not going anywhere.

We had this group do a complicated backyard design with concrete, pebbles and soil on three levels of our yard. We changed our minds about what we wanted several times. The DiBara team was very responsive and performed excellently. Their prices were reasonable given all the work that they did. We recommend them as excellent for landscaping.

I recently had DiBara's team do a widening of my driveway with brickwork requiring a lot of intensive cutting and careful work. Though the job took an extra day than originally planned, it came out very well and I would definitely recommend them. The team leaders are responsive and very accommodating as well.

DiBara did a great job fixing a retaining wall and stairs in our back yard. The site visit was easy to schedule, their price was better than competitors, and the repairs and resurfacing have really improved the look of our back yard. I would use them again for concrete projects.

Richard M DiBara Masonry provided the most reasonable solution to our problem of loose and bowing brickwork over industrial warehouse rollup doors. They were also the least expensive of the three companies who gave me an estimate. Quick response, good communication, excellent work and cleanup. Will certainly use them again if needed.

DiBara Masonry repaired my brick and wood fence that was badly damaged when a car slammed into it. Matt came out and assessed the damage and sent crews to rebuild the entire section. The brick work was outstanding and the crews were professional and knowledgeable. The job involved not only rebuilding the brick wall but replacing a cracked cement retaining wall and the wood planks. They did an amazing job and it actually looks better than before. I highly recommend this company!

Dibara Masonry was fantastic to work with. Matt came by and did a comprehensive assessment of the work to be done, then a detailed plan of how he and his team would accomplish it. The crew was extremely polite, prompt and professional, completing the job in the exact amount of time initially predicted. Overall it was a great experience and I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again or recommend Dibara Masonry.

Best contractor that I have worked with in a long time. Matt came down and gave us sound advice on our somewhat tricky project and then the crew came and executed meticulously and expertly. I liked working with each and every member of the team. They got it done in the desired timeframe avoiding all possible complications. Totally happy with the work. Way to go DiBara Masonry! Hillside Retaining Walls in Los Angeles, CA & Nearby Areas

DiBara Masonry has been solving hillside soil problems in Los Angeles for four generations and more than 100 years. We design every wall around the actual grade, soil, and drainage path of your property, never a one-size template, and back it with a licensed CSLB contractor (#1002003) and, where required, a stamped structural engineer.

Rated 4.9 stars across 144+ verified reviews, and recognized with a Congressional award for quality and craftsmanship. Our hillside retaining wall specialists handle design, permits, engineering coordination, and construction under one contract.

What Makes a Hillside Different From a Flat-Lot Retaining Wall

A flat-lot wall mostly holds back loose fill from a single grade change. A hillside wall resists the ongoing downhill push of an entire slope, plus whatever load sits above it, a driveway, a pool, or a second structure. That surcharge changes the footing size, the steel reinforcement, and often the whole wall type.

Hillside lots also concentrate water. Rain that would spread out on a flat yard instead funnels toward the base of the slope, building up hydrostatic pressure behind the wall. That is why drainage design, not just wall thickness, decides whether a hillside wall lasts decades or fails within a few rainy seasons. Our how to choose the right retaining wall guide breaks down how those factors change the design.

Signs Your Los Angeles Hillside Needs a Retaining Wall

Soil creep or rutting after rain, a fence that has started leaning above a slope, and cracks appearing near the top of a grade are all early warning signs. So are patios or parking areas that feel like they are losing support, or water pooling behind an existing wall instead of draining away. We cover the full list in 7 signs you need a retaining wall.

You do not need a dramatic hillside to have hillside conditions. If your yard is not flat, you already have soil movement, water flow, and uneven load working against you, acting early, before a crack becomes a slide, is almost always the cheaper and safer path. When a wall is already moving, our guide on whether to repair or rebuild a failing sloped wall explains how we make that call.

Types of Hillside Retaining Walls We Build

Gravity walls use heavy concrete or CMU mass to resist sliding and overturning, and work well on shorter walls or tiered terraces that step a steep lot into usable flat areas. Cantilevered walls add a reinforced footing and stem with the heel extending into the backfill, which makes them efficient for medium heights carrying a driveway or patio surcharge above.

For taller walls or lots with very limited excavation room, we use anchored systems, tiebacks or soil nails, to add resistance without a massive footprint. The right choice depends on height, soil, access, and the load above the wall, which is exactly what we assess during the free site visit before quoting a fixed price. See our concrete retaining walls page for engineered poured-in-place options.

Engineering, Seismic Design, and LADBS Permits

Most engineered hillside walls in Los Angeles require a permit, and height, surcharge, or proximity to a property line typically triggers the requirement for a licensed structural engineer. We coordinate directly with LADBS permit requirements for retaining walls on plan check and schedule the standard inspection stages, footing, rebar, grout, and final, as part of the project timeline. Our summary of the 2026 LA retaining wall requirements covers what applies to most residential lots.

Southern California walls also carry real seismic loads on top of everyday soil pressure. Our engineered designs size footing width, embedment depth, and reinforcement to current California Building Code seismic requirements and ASCE 7 seismic design loads, informed by USGS earthquake hazard maps for the LA basin. That is one more reason a taller hillside wall is not a project to build without an engineer’s stamp.

Drainage and Waterproofing: Where Most Hillside Walls Actually Fail

Trapped water is the number one cause of retaining wall failure, and it is entirely preventable. Every hillside wall we build includes washed gravel backfill with filter fabric, a perforated drain pipe at the footing elevation with a positive outlet, and weep holes where the design calls for them. Our retaining wall drainage guide walks through each layer.

We also apply a waterproofing membrane on the soil side of concrete or CMU walls and grade the surface above the wall so stormwater moves away from the structure instead of building up behind it. This is the difference between a wall that needs attention every rainy season and one that simply disappears into the landscape. Where a wall ties into the house, we pair it with foundation waterproofing services.

Materials We Use on LA Hillside Projects

Poured concrete gives the most flexibility for engineered cantilevered and anchored walls, while reinforced CMU (cinder block) offers a faster, cost-effective build for gravity and shorter cantilevered designs. Both accept a natural stone or brick veneer where the client wants the finished look of full masonry without the added structural cost.

We also frequently replace aging railroad-tie or timber hillside walls, which rot, attract termites, and can fail without warning as the wood weakens. Those get rebuilt in code-compliant concrete or CMU with proper drainage designed in from day one, not retrofitted after the fact. For budgeting, see our retaining wall cost breakdown.

Our Process, From Free Consultation to Final Inspection

It starts with a free quote based on basic project details, followed by an in-person site visit where we measure the slope, check soil conditions, and review access before confirming a fixed price, no hidden costs after the fact. An initial proposal follows within 72 hours of that visit.

Once you sign, our team confirms a start date, pulls permits, coordinates any required engineering, and assigns both a project manager and an on-site foreman to your build. You get a clear schedule up front and consistent updates through every LADBS inspection stage until final sign-off.

Why Homeowners on LA Hillsides Choose DiBara Masonry

DiBara Masonry is a fourth-generation, family-owned masonry contractor with 100+ years of masonry experience, licensed under CSLB #1002003 (C29 Masonry, C-8 Concrete), and rated 4.9 stars across 144+ verified reviews. We have been recognized with a Congressional award for quality and craftsmanship and named a top masonry and concrete company in Los Angeles. See recent hillside project photos from Hollywood Hills and Laurel Canyon terracing jobs.

On a hillside, that experience shows up in the details other contractors skip: the drainage plan, the seismic reinforcement, the honest conversation about whether your slope needs an engineer before we ever pour concrete.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hillside Retaining Walls in Los Angeles

How much does a hillside retaining wall cost in Los Angeles?

Most hillside retaining walls in Los Angeles run between $75 and $200+ per linear foot, depending on wall height, soil conditions, access, and material. A short gravity wall on an easy-access lot sits at the low end; a tall engineered cantilevered or anchored wall on a steep, tight-access hillside sits at the high end. We provide a fixed price only after a site visit, since drainage, excavation, and engineering requirements vary lot by lot.

Do I need a permit for a hillside retaining wall in Los Angeles?

In most cases, yes. LADBS generally requires a permit for walls above a certain height, walls that carry a surcharge such as a driveway or pool, and any wall near a property line or structure. We pull permits, coordinate the required engineering, and schedule inspections as part of every hillside project so the wall is fully code-compliant.

What is the best type of retaining wall for a steep hillside?

There is no single best type; the right system depends on height, soil, and space. Gravity walls work well for shorter, tiered slopes; cantilevered concrete or CMU walls handle medium heights with surcharges like driveways; anchored systems with tiebacks or soil nails are used for taller walls or lots with limited excavation room. We recommend the system after reviewing the actual soil and grade on-site.

How do you stop water pressure from destroying a hillside wall?

Water is the leading cause of retaining wall failure, so every hillside wall we build includes a drainage plan: washed gravel backfill, a perforated drain pipe at the footing with a positive outlet, weep holes where specified, and a waterproofing membrane on the soil side of the wall. Surface grading is also adjusted to move stormwater away from the wall instead of behind it.

How long does it take to build a hillside retaining wall in LA?

A typical hillside wall takes anywhere from two to six weeks once permits are approved, depending on height, length, and site access. Taller engineered walls with anchors or extensive excavation take longer. We give a specific schedule after the site visit and factor in the standard LADBS inspection stages: footing, rebar, grout, and final.

Can DiBara Masonry replace a failing wood or railroad-tie retaining wall?

Yes, and it is one of our most common hillside calls. Timber and railroad-tie walls rot, attract termites, and can fail without warning once the wood weakens. We remove the failing structure and replace it with an engineered concrete, CMU, or stone-veneer wall built to current code, with proper drainage designed in from the start.

How does earthquake risk affect hillside retaining wall design in Los Angeles?

Southern California walls must resist both constant soil pressure and seismic loading. Our engineered designs size the footing width, embedment depth, and steel reinforcement to account for regional seismic forces per current California Building Code requirements, which is one reason taller hillside walls almost always require a licensed structural engineer.

What is the difference between a gravity wall and a cantilevered wall?

A gravity wall relies on its own mass, usually heavy concrete or CMU, to resist the soil behind it, which makes it a good fit for lower walls or tiered terraces. A cantilevered wall uses a reinforced footing and stem, with the heel extending back into the backfill, which lets it resist greater height and surcharge loads with less material.

Do you work with structural engineers on hillside retaining wall projects?

Yes. Most hillside walls in Los Angeles that exceed a certain height, carry a surcharge, or sit near a property line require a stamped engineering design. We coordinate directly with licensed structural engineers on footing size, reinforcement, and anchor design, then build to those approved plans and through the required LADBS inspections.

How do I get started with a free hillside retaining wall quote in LA?

Call (323) 784-3573 or request a free virtual consultation online. We review your slope, photos, and any known constraints, then schedule an in-person site visit to measure the grade, check soil and drainage, and confirm a fixed price before any work begins, with no obligation to move forward.
