“We had two contractors tell us the driveway wall just needed patching. DiBara had an engineer look at the footing, showed us why it was moving, and installed a new wall with proper drainage. Straight answers the whole way through.”

DiBara team deserves a 5-star plus plus for the work that they wall that they repaired for us. I have worked with various contractors over the past 30 years, but this is the first time that the process was smooth, on budget, on time and the outcome exceeded my expectations. Our wall was damaged via a car accident driven by our neighbor (please see before and after pictures attached). Early in the process, Renee was quick to provide a high level quote via a zoom call. Then Edgar came to my house to observe the damage and provided a detailed quote. There was a cap on how much the insurance company was paying so Edgar worked with his team to give us additional discounts in order to reduce the amount of money our neighbor would have to pay out of pockets. Their prices were lower than two other companies so the $97 inspection fee was credited. The construction team included Chayan, Francisco, Leo, Gabrino, Joe , Fernando and Juan, and they all were professional, meticulous, courteous and operated safety. Francisco, Edgar and Chayan accommodated the higher quality bricks that we chose without nickel and dime us and our neighbor. The team communicated progress well and cleaned up the area at the end of each day. I feel this company is ethical, provides superior work and services to its customers at lower prices. I definitely will use DiBara Masonry again and will be referring this company to others. Thank you DiBara team!!

I called DiBara Masonry after a vehicle had struck my wall, severely damaging it. They came out, gave me a very detailed proposal for my insurance and took care of the repair in a clean and timely manner. They were able to match the existing stucco perfectly. When I found a few issues with the paint after the job was completed, the DiBara crew stood by their work and came back out to correct the problem. This is my second time using these professionals and I will continue to use them for any further projects on my home.

We loved working with DiBara on our project. Work was delivered on-time with courtesy and professionalism. We installed steps in our front yard. It was not a small job (for us), being on a hill, and, in addition to the masonry, included installing custom railing and adding low voltage lighting. Communication with our project rep, Chayan, was smooth and timely. He coordinated subs (Roberto the electrician was also awesome) and kept us informed. Our on-site project manager, Carlos, and his team were great. We worked cooperatively on the design, and Carlos came up with a better result than we could have imagined, and consistently kept in mind the goal of the project (give my elderly dad a way to get from the street to the house safely) We added to the scope of work mid-way through, and DiBara handled it all with professionalism. We recommend them wholeheartedly.

I needed to repair a crack in my driveway block wall as well as lay down some concrete in my driveway. My experience with DiBara Masonry was excellent from the initial call, to the in home estimate, as well as signing the contract thru the online portal (which also accepts payments). Fredy, Jessie, Darwin, Francisco, Miriam and the rest of the team were all on-time everyday, professional, experienced, and very skilled. The team has pride in the quality of their work— that resonated with me to the extent that I doubled the scope of the Project (demolished an old stucco wood based wall and replaced it with a 7 foot block wall). DiBara sent more manpower when it was needed, and the team cleaned up so well after alot of demolition debris. Even after my final invoice payment — I needed them to repair a small leak in a water line that needed to be moved. Fredy accommodated this request without any hesitation. I HIGHLY recommend DiBara masonry for any services that they provide. Over the past 20 years, I’ve dealt with at least 10-15 contractors for various projects, and DiBara Masonry is at the top of the list of Contractors with whom I’m most satisfied. Thank you Dibara! Quick update January 2026: I used Dibara once more to repair alot of stucco and weatherproof damage on my detached garage, as well as laid new concrete and tiles that nearly matched my 20 year old courtyard tiles— they were prompt, professional, and patient as they searched for several weeks to find tiles that matched my old ones. I would gladly use their services again for any project, in their words, “we can build anything outside of your house”. Thanks again Dibara!

DiBara masonry responded quickly to a wall that had been accidently damaged by a neighbor. They were able to identify a cost-effective solution that fit well within our budgets, sent people out immediately even though the weather wasn't the greatest, and completed the work, with it looking like it was never damaged in the first place. Thank you, would definitely recommend!

Dibara Masonry did a great job replacing a retaining wall that had fallen over. The whole process was seamless and easy. I will not hesitate to use them again. They gave me a couple options to repair it and explained everything thoroughly. I am confident that this retaining wall is not going anywhere.

We had this group do a complicated backyard design with concrete, pebbles and soil on three levels of our yard. We changed our minds about what we wanted several times. The DiBara team was very responsive and performed excellently. Their prices were reasonable given all the work that they did. We recommend them as excellent for landscaping.

I recently had DiBara's team do a widening of my driveway with brickwork requiring a lot of intensive cutting and careful work. Though the job took an extra day than originally planned, it came out very well and I would definitely recommend them. The team leaders are responsive and very accommodating as well.

DiBara did a great job fixing a retaining wall and stairs in our back yard. The site visit was easy to schedule, their price was better than competitors, and the repairs and resurfacing have really improved the look of our back yard. I would use them again for concrete projects.

Richard M DiBara Masonry provided the most reasonable solution to our problem of loose and bowing brickwork over industrial warehouse rollup doors. They were also the least expensive of the three companies who gave me an estimate. Quick response, good communication, excellent work and cleanup. Will certainly use them again if needed.

DiBara Masonry repaired my brick and wood fence that was badly damaged when a car slammed into it. Matt came out and assessed the damage and sent crews to rebuild the entire section. The brick work was outstanding and the crews were professional and knowledgeable. The job involved not only rebuilding the brick wall but replacing a cracked cement retaining wall and the wood planks. They did an amazing job and it actually looks better than before. I highly recommend this company!

Dibara Masonry was fantastic to work with. Matt came by and did a comprehensive assessment of the work to be done, then a detailed plan of how he and his team would accomplish it. The crew was extremely polite, prompt and professional, completing the job in the exact amount of time initially predicted. Overall it was a great experience and I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again or recommend Dibara Masonry.

The excellent team at DiBara were absolutely phenomenal. They not only successfully performed a complex renovation, but also expertly navigated a challenging regulatory environment including permits, inspections and always came up with timely and effective solutions. I can't thank the whole DiBara team enough for their hard work, care and dedication to our project. Matt, Edgar, Carlos, Erica and the whole team - are all real professionals and more importantly caring and kind people. The demolition, masonry and finishing work was all done extremely well, communication was top notch and pricing was fair and transparent. Highly recommended!

Best contractor that I have worked with in a long time. Matt came down and gave us sound advice on our somewhat tricky project and then the crew came and executed meticulously and expertly. I liked working with each and every member of the team. They got it done in the desired timeframe avoiding all possible complications. Totally happy with the work. Way to go DiBara Masonry! Five stars.

Retaining Wall Installation in Los Angeles, CA & Nearby Areas

Design-Build Stability for Los Angeles Terrain

With more than 4,300 structural projects completed across Southern California, we install retaining walls built to perform under extreme hillside conditions and strict municipal building codes. Every wall is tailored to stabilize your specific soil profile, protect your structural footprint, and turn an unstable slope into secure, usable land, with a single team accountable from the first site visit to the final LADBS inspection.

National recognition does not build a wall on your hillside. Local experience does. Every award on this page, including Best Masonry Company in Los Angeles 2025 and recognition by the U.S. Congress, ties back to completed, permitted, and inspected work across four generations of the same family business.

Structural Retaining Wall Design-Build Specialist

Standard masonry contractors often overlook the lateral forces a shifting hillside exerts. We design-build integrated structural systems: a licensed structural engineer is brought into every project that requires calculations, and we stay accountable from design through final inspection. By analyzing soil mechanics, active water tables, and seismic load factors alongside our engineering partners, we install walls that turn geological risk into a reliable structural asset, whether the right system for your site is poured concrete, properly engineered concrete block, or shotcrete. Our comparison of the three concrete systems lays out the trade-offs.

Engineered for Severe Slopes and LA Code

In Los Angeles, any retaining wall stabilizing a slope or measuring over 4 feet from the bottom of the footing requires structural engineering calculations and formal city permits. Hillside zoning can trigger those same requirements below 4 feet, and LADBS restricts how close a footing or structure can sit next to a wall, generally within a horizontal distance equal to the wall height unless the adjacent ground is level. See our guide to footings, depths, and setbacks and our overview of 2026 LADBS requirements.

We manage the entire lifecycle of the build, combining engineered steel reinforcement schedules with subsurface drainage layouts that address the primary cause of retaining wall failure: hidden hydrostatic pressure. As your design-build contractor, we catch setback and zoning issues before they become a stop-work order mid-project. Our drainage guide explains what goes in behind the wall.

High-Performance Materials Tailored for Los Angeles Codes

The material determines whether a wall stands for decades or fails during the next wet season, but so does workmanship: a properly engineered, fully grouted, correctly waterproofed concrete block wall can perform on par with poured concrete for many applications. We install exclusively with heavy-duty, code-compliant materials and our own experienced crews.

Reinforced CMU (concrete block): heavily reinforced with interior rebar matrices, fully solid-grouted, and carefully waterproofed at every joint for superior seismic resistance. A well-built block wall is a different construction method from poured concrete, not a lesser one. Explore our Los Angeles block wall solutions.

Cast-in-place structural concrete: architectural precision and extreme load capacity, with maximum density and long service life on taller walls. Learn more about our structural concrete services.

Architectural brick and natural stone veneers: world-class aesthetics over a reinforced concrete core, for historic estates and high-value residential landscaping. See our stonework and stone restoration or brickwork installations. High-risk walls also receive full foundation waterproofing layers.

A Rigorous Design-Build Installation Process

From initial soil assessment to final LADBS sign-off, one company manages every step rather than several disconnected vendors. We begin with a preliminary estimate and scope assessment based on your property layout, grading requirements, and objectives, priced against realistic Southern California material averages. A structural masonry technician then performs an on-site design inspection and soil diagnostic, evaluating slope stability, active water runoff patterns, and site access constraints to lock in a fixed price and a firm execution timeline. Within 72 hours you receive a detailed design proposal, prepared in the exact format our partner structural engineers and LADBS reviewers need for efficient calculation approvals and permit processing. Permit timing rests with the city, so we keep you informed rather than promise dates.

Specialized Retaining Wall Systems for Every Topography

The choice of structural mechanics depends heavily on your property soil composition, available space, and total load requirements, and it is one of the first things we assess on a site visit. Most hillside properties in Los Angeles end up using one of the three systems below, sometimes combined on a single lot where different sections carry different loads.

Cantilevered retaining walls: an L-shaped or T-shaped structural footprint converts the vertical weight of the soil behind the wall into stabilizing downward pressure on the footing. This style demands precision in steel rebar scheduling and high-strength concrete execution.

Gravity retaining walls: mass, volume, and density hold back the earth. These suit localized landscape grading and terraced tiers, and we often reinforce older unreinforced gravity structures rather than removing them.

Anchored and tieback retaining walls: for heavy hillside loads and steep canyons, structural steel anchors are driven into stable bedrock, mechanically tying the wall system into the hill.

Uncompromising Craftsmanship Backed by Century-Old Standards

Every mason on our team is trained in structural work: complex rebar layouts, grading requirements, and integrations with existing concrete driveways and foundations. Because we are a design-build company, the crew trained to that standard is the crew that shows up on your job, not subcontracted labor assembled for the project. Our lifespan and maintenance guide explains what that difference means in years of service.

Frequently Asked Questions About Retaining Wall Installation in Los Angeles

Do I need a permit to install a retaining wall in Los Angeles?

Usually, yes. According to the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS), any retaining wall exceeding 4 feet in height, measured from the bottom of the subterranean footing to the top of the wall, requires formal structural calculations, a geotechnical soils report, and an approved building permit. Any wall stabilizing a steep or active slope, or located in a hillside grading zone, requires a permit regardless of height.

How long does a retaining wall installation take?

Construction itself typically runs from a few days for a short garden wall to several weeks for a tall engineered hillside wall, driven by excavation, footing size, curing time, and site access. The bigger variable is plan check and permitting, which sits with the city. We give you a firm construction timeline after the site visit and keep you updated on the permit side rather than promising city dates.

What are the primary causes of retaining wall failure in Southern California?

Trapped hydrostatic pressure, not the weight of the soil itself. When rain saturates hillside clay, water pools behind the wall. Without weep holes, perforated subdrain pipes, or drainage panels, or with a broken irrigation line quietly saturating the soil, that pressure will crack, bow, or collapse the structure. Seismic loading is the second leading cause in unreinforced historic walls. See why walls fail early in LA.

How does DiBara Masonry handle drainage on a new installation?

Every wall we install gets an integrated, multi-layered drainage system: an engineered French drain at the heel of the footing, perforated PVC wrapped in geo-textile filter fabric, washed crushed rock in the backfill zone, and drainage exit ports directing water away from foundations. High-risk walls also receive foundation waterproofing. Details are in our drainage guide.

Is a concrete block (CMU) retaining wall as strong as a poured concrete wall?

When it is engineered, fully grouted, correctly reinforced, and properly waterproofed by an experienced crew, yes. A well-built block wall performs on par with poured concrete for many applications. The performance gap between the two systems is almost always about workmanship, not the material.

How close can a fence, patio, or structure be built next to my new wall?

LADBS generally restricts placing a new footing or structure within a horizontal distance equal to the wall height from the wall, front or back, unless the adjacent ground is level. We build this setback-by-height rule into every design from the start. Our footings guide covers it in detail.

At what wall height does LADBS require a soils report?

Typically once a wall approaches roughly 4.5 to 5 feet, since above that point soil conditions vary too much across a Los Angeles hillside for an engineer to estimate without site-specific data. In hillside grading or landslide-risk zones, that threshold can drop to 4 feet.

Can you replace an existing timber or railroad-tie wall?

Yes, and it is one of our most common installations. Standard pressure-treated timber walls in Los Angeles typically need replacement within 10 to 20 years as rot and insect damage set in. We replace them with code-compliant reinforced CMU or poured concrete that will not decay, and we correct the drainage the original wall was usually missing.

What does design-build mean, and why should that matter to me?

It means DiBara Masonry manages the structural engineer relationship, the LADBS permit submittal, and the physical construction under one roof and one point of contact, instead of you coordinating separate vendors. Most retaining wall problems we are called to repair originated in the gap between an engineer, a permit runner, and a builder who never fully coordinated with each other.

How long will my new retaining wall last?

With correct engineering, reinforcement, and drainage, both poured concrete and properly built CMU block walls regularly exceed 50 years, and 75-plus is realistic with today codes and detailing. Our lifespan and maintenance guide breaks that down by material and lists what shortens it.

What does retaining wall installation cost in Los Angeles?

Cost is driven by height, length, excavation, access, materials, soil conditions, and drainage. We provide a clear fixed price after the on-site design inspection, with no hidden surprises. Our 2026 cost guide gives realistic ranges by wall type and height so you can budget before the visit.

Do you work on both residential and commercial properties?

Yes. We install and repair retaining walls for single-family homes, multi-unit residential properties, and commercial sites across Los Angeles, including landslide-prone and seismic-prone zones in the Hollywood Hills, Laurel Canyon, Bel Air, Silver Lake, and Pacific Palisades.
